What is the best dehydrator in 2020

A food dehydrator is a kitchen appliance that allows you to easily dry food by heating and circulating air. The process involves removing as much water as possible from the fruits and vegetables on the trays. In this way, the hot air heats the food so that the water in it evaporates. Dehydrated fruit can then be stored for longer.

Many people use food dehydrators as preservative (vegetables, fruit, herbs, ready meals, dried meat, mushrooms, etc.). But above all, it is a way of making these foods even more delicious, tasty and easy to transport or cook.

And it is important to know that dehydration of your food is excellent for your health. First of all, it helps stop the moulding process by absorbing water from food. In this way, the preservation of food is optimized, which avoids food wastage.

A food dehydrator is, therefore, able to dry your fruits and vegetables quickly and efficiently while maintaining flavour and nutritional value. Drying your food will therefore not cause any nutrient loss. By dehydrating your food with this appliance, you can keep it at its best to enjoy it in all seasons, without having a negative impact on the environment.

Moreover, the purchase of a dehydrator will give you the opportunity to diversify the pleasures of taste in the kitchen and to test many possibilities on a menu. What a pleasure, for example, to add dried fruit to your morning muesli!

Finally, investing in the purchase of this device is profitable because it will save you money by preventing you from ending up with rotten fruits and vegetables after only a few days.

But nowadays, there is a wide variety of food dehydrators on the market. But to dehydrate your food properly and efficiently, it is essential to acquire a good appliance. As a home chef, I have had the opportunity to test several dehydrators but also to talk to the different owners of the appliances. So I decided to put together this little buying guide with the different criteria to take into account before buying your machine.

Type of dehydrator

You will have to choose between solar and electric dehydrators.

A solar dehydrator, as the name suggests, uses the sun’s rays to power the unit and turns it on to dry your food. It is the most environmentally friendly model, but it is not entirely effective because you cannot regulate the heat of the appliance. Also, you are dependent on whether or not the sun is present. It works, but it is not the most practical model.

As for the electric dehydrator, it works on a conventional power outlet. The principle is quite simple in itself: the resistors generate heat while the fans transmit it to all the floors for uniform dehydration. It is the most popular on the market and is offered in different models. It is this model that will be of particular interest to us in this article.

Capacity

Depending on the amount of food you wish to dehydrate regularly, you will have a choice of different food dehydrators with a capacity of 5 to 10 trays. The more trays you have, the more food you can put out to dry. After that, it is quite essential to consider the size of the appliance in relation to space in your kitchen to avoid cluttering it up too much, as these appliances can sometimes be quite large. There’s no point in going for an appliance with a gargantuan capacity if you don’t have to use it.

The dehydration method

This is an important criterion for choosing this type of device. There are three types of food dehydrators: horizontal, vertical and infrared models. Choose a vertical model if you don’t have enough space in your kitchen and don’t like noisy appliances.

However, for efficient and uniform dehydration, it is preferable to alternate trays from time to time on this type of dehydrator. On the other hand, a horizontal model is perfect for obtaining optimal results without having to check the progress of the drying process. It is also the most widespread model on the market.

Finally, dehydrators using infrared waves are also interesting for their efficiency.

Materials used

Dehydrators can be designed with different materials. In addition to the quality of assembly and finishing, attention must also be paid to the quality of the materials. Stainless steel, a fairly durable and hygienic material, is generally used, as well as plastic. If plastic is used, make sure it is BPA-free.

Features

A food dehydrator with a timer is preferable so that you can adjust the drying time according to the types of food inside. Prefer models with a timer of at least 19 hours for peace of mind.

Some models have an adjustable temperature so that you can adjust it according to the type of food to be dried and the desired result. So that’s pretty important! In this case, you will have to pay attention to the temperature range to make sure that it is suitable for your use. In general, the ideal range is between 35°C and 70°C.

The presence of an LED display will also be appreciated and will facilitate the programming of your dehydrator.

Price

If you wish to opt for a food dehydrator model that is not too expensive, the price of entry-level products ranges from around $50 to $100 depending on the model, brand and capacity. For the mid-range models, they are sold from 100 to 300 €. Finally, if you wish to turn to a more high-end model, count 300 to more than $500.

Generally, these devices are cheaper online, and the offer is much wider. In stores, since this market is still a bit “niche”, prices are often higher and the choice is less. You have been warned. Also, merchant sites like Amazon often offer free shipping, and what’s more, a 30-day return window. Ideal to try the device if you are not completely convinced.

Customer reviews

I often look at the opinions of previous buyers. It’s a very good way to form an opinion on this or that model of the dehydrator. And with the merchant sites, it has become very easy to consult these opinions. It will, therefore, be quite recommended to start with a unit whose average rating exceeds 3 stars.

Brand and warranty

If you can, it is best to choose a brand name device. My favourite brands for these appliances remain Riviera & Bar, Klarstein and BioChef. You will get a reliable device with a good warranty and access to a real after-sales service. Also, it will be easier to find accessories and product information.

Here’s a list of my favorite food dehydrators! Keep in mind that I only recommend products that I’ve tried and loved – I either own them or tried them at work or in a cooking class.
